Louise Alexander is a conceptual artist and educator based in regional New South Wales, Australia. Her work prioritises communication over aesthetics, engaging with the complexities of human experience through painting, drawing, mixed media, sculpture, textiles, and socially responsive installations. Across her practice, she examines how language, perception, and interpersonal dynamics shape our understanding of self, community, and the wider world.
Louise has an extensive academic background, having collaborated with the University of Wollongong on SERAP-approved research projects within the NSW Department of Education and contributed to the Aboriginal Languages Project at the NSW Board of Studies. She has taught both undergraduate and postgraduate programs as Relieving Subject Coordinator for Visual Arts Education at the University of Technology Sydney, and has led Gifted and Talented workshops in Visual Arts and Writing at UOW, fostering creative growth in young learners.
Louise maintains a strong connection to regional communities and creative grassroots spaces. Her work is exhibited monthly through the Currarong Art Trail, and permanently at the Currarong Bowling Club - a humble community club in a small fishing village - displays a curated selection of artworks from participating “trailers”. This ongoing involvement reflects her commitment to staying grounded, accessible, and connected to local audiences outside formal gallery structures-.
Louise also consults on installation and spatial design for a South Coast wedding venue, developing atmospheric lighting concepts, sculptural interventions, curated photographic moments, and immersive sensory rooms that experiment with perception, invisibility, and emotional architecture. These collaborations extend her conceptual interests into public environments, shaping experiences through intentional materiality, narrative tone, and subtle integrations of contemporary art principles.Across each facet of her practice - from socially engaged ceramics to community exhibitions and spatial design - Louise remains anchored to connection, integrity, and the belief that art should engage compassionately with people and place..
Her socially engaged work includes the ongoing Societal Oath Project — a participatory artwork that invites people impacted by sexual harm, either directly or indirectly, to contribute written or inscribed “wishes”. These fragments of lived experience are transformed into torn-edged ceramic pages and assembled into a collective set of societal promises. The project examines how communities respond to disclosures, advocating for pride, connection, and informed support in place of silence, dismissal, or shame. At its heart, it seeks to establish a shared oath — a socially conscious scaffold for empathy, responsibility, and collective healing.
Louise’s broader socially engaged practice has been recognised nationally for its contribution to domestic-violence advocacy, informing the conceptual and ethical foundations of the Societal Oath Project and shaping her continuing exploration of communication, harm prevention, and community integrity.
